I've been saying that for years. Also, the number of calipers doesn't mean much. A tractor trailer's drum brake will stop your car much better than a motorcycle's 6 piston caliper. It's not about the style you use, it's more about the size and capacity. You can make large, strong 2 piston calipers if you want or you could make small and weak 8 piston calipers if you want. You're not limited by the style you use. On just about any car brake, it won't be limited by clamping force. There's no use making a caliper grip even harder when your tire can't even come close to handing that force and keeping traction with the road. They're better off working on dissipating heat to improve fade resistance. Read some of my old posts, I've covered this many times. It's all about physics- handling forces. Styles and fads are meaningless in this discussion. Fashion doesn't stop your car. BMW is going with what works.
